Baloo Fast At Woodville
“The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH.
Woodville stables have three runners in the Manawatu Cup at Awapuni on Saturday and all worked well today in their semifinal trials for the race. Baloo and Janeville sprinted freely over seven furlongs while Far Cry was in top form over six furlongs.
Baloo was sent alone over seven furlongs on the plough and he ran the distance comfortably in Imin 30 4-ssec, taking 38 4-ssec -for his last three. Far Cry was impressive in a steady run over six furlongs in Imin ISjsec. He could have gone faster and this run, coupled with his consistent form, will earn him a following for the race.
Janeville, which faces her most serious test this weekend, ran seven furlongs effortlessly in Imin 32 2-ssec, taking 39sec for her final three. She showed she could stay in the Oaks and she appeals as one of the best light-weights. Polo Prince completed two steady rounds of the plough without sprinting. Similar work was given Strontian. Both are solid and fit.
Sherlocks, a leading contender for the Kelvin Handicap, covered six furlongs easily in Imin 20sec and he could show Improved form this week in the easier class.
Rahpete, Sail Away, and Jen Hai were in that order at the end of a solid mile in linin 42 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 51 sec and the last three in 38 3-5 sec. Rahpete, with the best of the weights, looked Impressive, but so did Sail Away on the eve of his departure for Ellerslie.
