Abortion
Sir, —How much longer must New Zealand, which has every right to be proud of its medical and social services, await legal abortion. How many more young women are to meet their deaths in dingy back streets? How many more innocent children are to be born in New Zealand irreparably damaged by unsuccessful abortion attempts by their mothers? I am convinced our mental hospitals and prisons would be emptier if abortion were legalised. You cannot blame a young girl in trouble or an overburdened wife for seeking out an abortionist, as there is no alternative if she does not wish to have the child. Other so-called backward nations have legalised abortion, but, unfortunately, here in New Zealand the subject is strictly taboo.—Yours, etc., W. C. DAVIDSON. December 18, 1966.
