WASHINGTON, Dec. 19.
The use of dirty politics and appeals to religious and racial prejudice during election campaigning does not pay, according to an investigation made at Washington. At least, it did not pay any dividends during this year's major United States political campaigns, the fair campaign practices committee reported yesterday. The bi-partisan committee, which includes among its honourary members two former Presidents, Mr Harry Truman and General Dwight Eisenhower, said it had investigated 51 complaints, 27 against Democrats, 21 against Republicans and three against other political groups. In 68 per cent of the cases involving dirty politics, the candidate using unfair campaign tactics was defeated, tbe committee said.
