Nearly £6m Tax From Racing
As -Minister of Finance in a Government that had received nearly £6 million in revenue out of racing last year, he was naturally interested in the well-being of the sport, said Mr Lake at Riccarton yesterday.
\ Mr Lake was speaking at | the final function of the threeday school for apprentices and future apprentice jockeys at Riccarton racecourse. The Government, he said, would give sympathetic attention to the recommendations that would come from the committee which was hearing requests for taxation relief for smaller racing and trotting clubs. Mr Lake presented prizes to several who had attended
[the school, which was sponsored by the Canterbury Owners’, Trainers', and Breeders' Association and the Canterbury Jockey Club. Major prizes were won by R. Moir, C. Plowman, G. Gullery, R. Murphy, P. Murtha, and L. Clark. The school was conducted by Mr D. V. Spicer. The riding master was Mr A. E. Ellis, who was assisted by the Riccarton jockeys, A. J. Stokes and D. N. Hadfield.
