BUSHCRAFT COURSES
Two Planned Next Year Two bushcraft courses for leaders of youth groups and clubs will be held in Canterbury early next year. They will be organised by the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association. A meeting of the Canterbury Mountain Safety Committee decided yesterday that the last week-ends in February and March would probably be the most suitable times to hold the courses. Mr A. S. Evans, co-ordinator of the Canterbury, West Coast and Nelson areas, told the meeting that equipment provided by the National Mountain Saftey Council was available for clubs and organisations engaged in mountain courses or in promoting leadership. It was held by the Canterbury conservancy of the Forest Service, and authority for its use could be obtained from him.
The equipment includes 12 four-men tents, axes, billies, ropes, primuses, cooking utensils, compasses and first-aid kits. Messrs F. A. Carter and A. F. Burdon were appointed liaison officers for the supervision of the equipment. Mr Evans said it had been proposed by the council that the South Island should have each year one or two bushcraft courses, three alpine courses, one or two shootingstalking courses, two ski-ing courses and search and rescue exercises.
