CHRISTMAS PARTIES

Replacement ByPicnics Urged The writing of Christmas in full in place of the common Xmas, replacing of staff parties composed mainly of drinking with family gatherings such as picnics, and removal of the emphasis on Father Christmas as the centre of Christmas activities are urged by the Christian Festivals Committee this year. Formed by members of churches and other organisations, the committee aims to bring a deeper understanding of the spiritual significance of Christmas before the public. To do this it encourages erection of nativity scene tableaux at strategic points around the city; produces posters emphasising the Christmas message for use in church and public displays; sponsors newspaper and magazine articles, and radio and television programmes; and encourages city stores to make room for displays highlighting the spiritual significance of Christmas.

There had been a very good response from business firms asked to display posters, said Miss J. Power, committee secretary. Nativity scenes would be erected in the Square, Victoria square, and Riccarton by the committee, and others were expected to be arranged by churches and other organisations. It was also hoped to display posters on lamp posts, Miss Power said.
