PENALTY WAIVED

Few Crews Scratching

The penalty applied to crews scratching from races in the Kerr’s Reach Pennant regatta series will not operate this season.

This was decided by a meet ing of the Canterbury Rowing Association last evening. The series operates on a points " system, three being awarded to the winner of each race, and the club with the most points wins the pennant.

A few months ago, the association ruled that clubs would lose a point each time their crews scratched from races in the series. Last season many crews withdrew from races after clubs had left only one crew to race. Mr J. Renaut said that there had been few scratchings in this year’s series and moved that the loss of points penalty be waived for this season.

With one more regatta in the series to be rowed. Union is leading with 12 points and Canterbury and Avon are equal with eight points.

Record Break.—The defending champion, G. Owen (England), beat Mohammed Lafir (Ceylon), six frames to two, in a world amateur snooker championship match. Owen set a championship record break of 118 in the first frame improving his owp record of 106.
