Prizes Presented At Xavier College

The first and most necessary aim of education and the most essential equipment to give the pupil was a sound philosophical goal for living, said the director of Xavier College (the Rev. Brother Maurice) at the prize-giving cermony on Tuesday. What other motives for living than the great Christian-

based goals offered a morality for a secular age? he asked. The frustration of modern living was to exist without adequate aims. Young people must be taught to think as well as to work. In this boys needed to learn humility as well as the humanities: self-knowledge as well as scientific knowledge. Creative, bold, and imaginative thinking was needed to meet the challenges of the times, said Brother Maurice. Prizes were presented by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P.
