Returned Twice

A Military Airlift Command Cl4l Starlifter bound for Christchurch with 28 men aboard was twice forced to return to Hickam Air Force base, Honolulu, yesterday with mechanical problems. When the Starlifter left Hickam the first time it was due in Christchurch at 10.45 p.m. One hour out from Honolulu

the plane returned with a faulty door latch seal. On the second departure the Starlifter was about two hours on its journey when a decision was made to return again to Hickam. The nature of the second mechanical fault was not known at Christchurch last night.

The Starlifter is now expected here at 9 p.m. today.
