Strike Ballot

(From Our Own Reporter/

WELLINGTON, November 29.

New Zealanders should know within a week whether they will face a pre-Christmas rail strike.

The national council of the Railway Tradesmen’s Association, currently polling its 2400 members on whether they favour striking over higher pay margins for skill, expects to receive returns by next Tuesday.

Mr J. R. Ritchie, of Wanganui, president of the association, said tonight that if most members favoured direct action, his council would decide the timing and the form of the stoppage.

Any such move would paralyse the railways system.

The last association stoppage, in mid--1964, was caused by a similar dispute and, although limited to 24 hours, was timed for a Friday, causing the Railways Department to suspend services for three days.
