Air Force To Fly Home Stranded Tourists
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, November 29. An R.N.Z.A.F. Hercules tomorrow will fly home about 70 New Zealanders stranded on Norfolk Island by the Qantas pilots’ strike.
The Hercules will leave Whenuapai at 10 a.m. and is expected to arrive at Norfolk Island at noon. It will leave again at 1.30 p.m. and is expected at Mangere at 3.30 p.m.
The Hercules will carry freight on the outward trip. The New Zealand-Norfolk Island service is operated by Air New Zealand, using a chartered Qantas DC4, with an Australian crew.
Air New Zealand was unable to charter another plane to collect passengers because it would have been a breach of the International Federation of Pilots’ strike policy.
An Air New Zealand official said today that 28 of the New Zealanders had been waiting since Saturday to leave the island. Another 36 were due out tomorrow and a few more on Saturday.
All were being taken off the island because there would be no more flights while the strike lasted. Australian Associated Press reported today that most of the New Zealanders had run out of money and were living on credit in the island’s guest houses and hotels.
