Two Gain Rhodes Scholarships

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 29. Mr J. G. Beckett and Mr A. R. Galbraith, of Auckland, have gained Rhodes Scholarships.

Mr Beckett, aged 21, has completed a bachelor of mechanical engineering degree with first class honours at Auckland University. He is a former pupil of St. Kentigem’s College, Auckland, at which he was dux in 1962.

In 1964, 1965, and 1966 he won Auckland and New Zealand Universities blues in athletics and holds the New Zealand universities mile title with a record of 4:6.4.

At Oxford, Mr Beckett will read for a degree in philosophy, politics and economics. Mr Galbraith, aged 22, is a former pupil of Auckland Grammar School. His main interest in sport is cross-country running, but has held various administrative posts in university sporting activities in Auckland. Mr Galbraith sat final examinations for a bachelor of laws with honours this year, and intends studying for a bachelor of civil laws degree at Oxford.
