TO FLY TO ANTARCTIC

Hercules Of R.N.Z.A.F.

Three flights to the Antarctic would be made by the Royal New Zealand Air Force in January, the Chief of Air Staff (Air Vice-Marshal C. A. Turner) said on Tuesday. Hercules aircraft of No. 40 Squadron would be used in conjunction with the United States Antarctic Support Force and would carry both men and equipment from Christchurch to McMurdo Sound.

Three similar flights were made last year. No dates for the flights had been decided, but it was expected that they would take place in mid-January, phased into the Americans’ summer air lift operation. “Payload on the flights has been offered to the Americans again this year and the aircraft will carry New Zealand and American loads in support of this country’s and America’s Antarctic scientific programmes,” Air Vice-Mar-shal Turner said. “Events over recent years have shown the increasing importance and potential of the Antarctic and It is in New Zealand's interest that the R.N.Z.A.F. has experience in operating in the unusual environment which calls for special navigation techniques in addition to the problems encountered in extremely low temperatures,” he said.
