Paper Workers’ Strike Still On
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND November 22. The strike of 1750 pulp and paper workers continues. And an early settlement seems unlikely. Today employers and unions concerned held inconclusive talks at Rotorua and Kawerau.
An official for the Northern Federation of Woodpulp, Paper and Paper Products Workers, whose 450 men are on strike at the Tasman Pulp and Paper Company, said no plans had been made to resume the talks which they
had had at Kawerau with the employers. Mr C. Glendining, secretary of the New Zealand Woodpulp Paper and Paper Products Workers’ Federation, which covers the 1300 men out at the N.Z. Forest Products plants at Otahuhu, Penrose, Whakatane and Kinleith, said the talks they had had at Rotorua produced no agreement.
“The company said it was up to the federation to make the next move,” he said. Proposals had been put forward from both sides, but Mr Glendining refused to elaborate. “We could not recommend the offer they made to the men.”
