GREYMOUTH JOLTED

Some Buildings Evacuated

(From' Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, Nov. 22. An earthquake jolted Greymouth for a few seconds just after 10 o’clock this morning. It was preceded by a distinct roar. Very little damage was reported. The tremor was officially timed at 20 seconds past 10 o’clock, and its severity caused the tracer on the recording equipment at the Arnold power station to disappear for a few seconds. An officer at the station said that the light tracer was jolted so rapidly across the film that it did not leave any mark. Reports from Hokitika say that the tremor was fairly severe there. It was only slightly felt at Westport. Less than an hour after the earthquake at Greymouth there was a light fall of hail, with a drop in temperature. The Press Association describes the earthquake as the worst for at least four years, and says that several buildings in Greymouth were hastily evacuated. It was reported this afternoon that the earthquake measured 4.5 on the Richter scale.
