RACING Ursinus Is Westland Pick Today
The Reefton trainer, J. Lalor, scratched Vivien Robe and Clipper yesterday, leaving Jayess to run for his stable in the Haast Pass Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at Hokitika todav.
Ursinus and Totara Lad, both winners at the Westport spring meeting, and Taxman, a surprise winner at Rangiora on Labour Day, should now dispute favouritism and dominate the finish of the Westland Racing Club’s mile race.
Ability in soft ground should count for something at the end. Hokitika has had a fair amount of rain, an exceptional drying would be needed today to make the going anything better than easy. Slantre, Dark Chick and Patrician, all from South Canterbury stables, might dominate the finish of the Lake Mathieson Hack Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double.
Milontin and Lady Velvet, both Riccarton-trained maidens, were scratched yesterday for the Ross Trial Stakes, first leg of the on-course double. Milontin has also been withdrawn from the Kokatahi Stakes. Selections: — Noon.
