RUBBISH IN PAPER BAGS

New System Explained

A system of disposable bags for garbage collection that usually costs about 3d a week a household, was explained to the Christchurch Junior Chamber at a luncheon meeting this week. The sales manager of the Multiwall Division of N.Z. Forest Products, Ltd. (Mr L. J. Miers) said that where questionnaires had been taken, in general about 90 per cent favoured a change to disposable bags. The address, and films on refuse collection with disposable containers, were attended by the Mayor (Mr Manning). the City Engineer, and representatives of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, the South Island Tourist and Publicity Association, the Canterbury Progress League, Rotary, service clubs, the City Council health department, and others. Mr Miers said he thought the disposable system would be particularly suitable for the city area of Christchurch, where it would help combat congestion and would keep the city cleaner.

He said disposable refuse collection was clean and simple, and would save time and manpower. Refuse could be collected faster and more hygienically. Fewer loads to the tip site would be necessary. Mr Miers said that in Tauranga a load under the bin system took 1} hours. A load in disposable containers took one hour.
