PITCHES POOR

Threat To U.K. Clubs (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. The English county cricket administration has declared war on clubs with bad pitches. A meeting of the advisory county committee at Lord’s warned that first-class cricket will be banned on county grounds which fail to improve pitches at present in a poor condition. The M.C.C. assistant secretary, Mr D. B. Carr, who is on the committee, said that pitches last season were in the worst condition for years. The pitches on some grounds had been deteriorating through lack of effort by the clubs to improve them. The committee also decided to scrap the 65-over limit introduced last year as an experiment for the first innings in certain English cricket matches. The committee said it felt that it was unfair for young batsmen coming in low in the order and having to slog out in an effort to get quick runs.
