Queensland broke the back of the strong New South Wales batting on the first day of a Sheffield Shield match at Brisbane yesterday. The critical period of N.S.W.’s first innings was the two hours between lunch and tea when it lost six wickets for 110 runs.

N.S.W. 290/6 (L. Marks 81. G. Goffett 57, G. Davies 66 not out). Western Australia 250 (C. Milburn 66, B. Vernon 52, A. Connolly 4/54). Victoria 11/1.
