Society Working To Prevent Blindness
(New Zealand Presi A»sociation)
AUCKLAND, November 6
New Zealand eye surgeons have formed a society for the prevention of blindness, the first of its kind in the country.
Dr. C. Ring, of Auckland, president of the new society, said today that New Zealand had fallen behind other countries in the study of preventive techniques. Dr. Ring said that the welfare and education of the blind was already in the hands of the Foundation for the Blind.
“We hope that with the cooperation of the foundation, the Health Department and other interested groups, it will be possible to reduce the incidence of preventable eye accidents and other causes of blindness," he said. The new society would be available in a consultative capacity for all visual problems in industry, schools, homes, or as a facet of the
general health of the community. Statistics obtained would be submitted for computer analysis to provide a correct scientific basis for accident prevention. Other groups would be invited to take part in the work which would include research into visual problems in the Pacific Islands.
