IRRIGATION WATER
Council Plans Outlined
Plans to provide water for spray irrigation had been discussed at a meeting of farmers held on November 1, it was reported to the Paparua County Council last night It was agreed to have a meeting of those interested in taking water on November 30 to form a committee, and to discuss details of the proposal. The council was told that 21 properties, amounting to 6000 acres, would use the water between the Halkett intake and the Islington freezing works. Nine cusecs would be available from the council’s main water-race, or enough to spray-irrigate up to 1300 acres.
Basic allocations of water had been made for each property, and a charge of £250 a cusec was proposed for each irrigation season, with no charge to those not wanting water.
On this basis, the council would get up to £2247 in revenue, and the amount paid by individual properties would range from £7 to £625 for Paparua Prison.
Cr. L. P. Manion said that the water charge could be reduced to £BO a cusec for the first year and £l6O a cusec for the second year to help meet costs of preparing land for irrigation.
