General News

Expansion The county population had risen from 10,500 to 18,786 since 1956, and the capital rateable value from £8.96m to £28.32m, the chairman (Mr D. H. Warren) told the annual meeting of the Paparua County Council last night. In the same period, rates levied rose from £70,426 to £210,213. Delivery Change The Christchurch Metropolitan Milk Board yesterday approved an application from vendors to make a delivery in the afternoon and evening on New Year’s Eve, instead of early on the morning of New Year’s Day. Notice will be given to all consumers affected. Hepatitis Cases Two cases of infective hepatitis were reported to the Health Department for the week ended November 5. One was a man in his sixties in the Paparua county, and the other a man in his thirties in the city. Two cases of pulmonary tuberculosis were also reported—a woman in her fifties and a man in his thirties in the city area. Accounts Grow Money held in post office investment accounts increased by £232,000 during October, the Chief Postmaster (Mr M. E. Wilson) told the Christchurch Savings Committee yesterday. Mr Wilson said the increase was attributed to the influence of Savings Week during the month. He said there was little fluctuation in ordinary savings accounts. Mild Day The weather in Christchurch yesterday was cloudy and mild, with a maximum temperature of 60 degrees recorded at Harewood at 1 p.m. The wind in the morning was a light southerly, which changed to the north-east in the afternoon. The temperature at Harewood at 6 a.m. was 51 degrees, at 9 a.m. 53 degrees, and at noon 59 degrees. After the maximum of 60 degrees at 1 a.m. the temperature fell to 58 degrees at 3 p.m. and to 75 degrees at 4 p.m. The temperature recorded in the Botanic Gardens at 3 p.m. was 57 degrees.

1902 Mercedes First

A 1902 Mercedes was the first car to finish today in the annual London-to-Brigh-ton run. A German-entered 1893 Benz was the oldest in the field of 250 which earlier had left Hyde park, London, on the 53-mile pilgrimage. Thousands of spectators were out to cheer. The next entrants to reach Brighton were a 1903 De Dietrich and an 1898 De Dion Bouton tricycle. —London, November, 7. Pool Of Teachers Establishment of a pool of part-time teachers will be suggested to the Christchurch Secondary Schools’ Council by the Hillmorton High School board. The headmaster (Mr P. W. Murdoch) said at a meeting of the board last evening schools now depended largely on word-of-mouth reports on such staff but, if teachers available for part-time work could be encouraged to register with the council, considerable resources might be discovered. Subdivisions Four subdivisions at Hornby would yield £15,626 to the council in cash payments in lieu of contributing land for recreation, the Paparua County Council was told last night. The payments would comprise £5OBB from British Pavements, Ltd., £3960 from the Skerton subdivision, £3575 from the Parker subdivision, and £3003 from Paramount Homes, Ltd.
