School Beginners
Sir,—Regarding Mr J. F. Williams’s article, “In Disparagement of Unreadiness,” I am dubious of his assumption that most five-year-olds used to find it easy to make the transition from the small family group to the larger, and often frightening, classroom. Children who did have difficulties were not helped by the fact that “social adjustment” used to be largely ignored; Children who may well be capable of very early learning are not necessarily ready emotionally to integrate into school life. Play centres and kindergartens, theoretical educationists, and sympathetic primary school teachers are all playing a part in making the transition easier at this impressionable age. Even if we are satisfied with ourselves as well-adjusted products of the old systems, perhaps we should concede that there is room for improvement.— Yours, etc., M. F. BIGELOW. November 3, 1966.
