CANCER SOCIETY CRITICISED
Strong criticism of the New Zealand Cancer Society for its alleged failure in the campaign against smoking is made in the latest journal of the National Association on Smoking and Health. The society had “deftly sidestepped the medico-political struggle against smoking,” said the association. “In doing so it has betrayed its own cause and taken up sides with the tobacco interests. In effect, it is lulling the country into the false belief of active anti-cancer campaigning, while the tobacco companies exploit the urgently needed breathing space to penetrate and strengthen footholds in the medical life of. the country, as they have in sports.” The journal quoted a further letter from the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) who said that the question of requiring a cancer warning on all cigarette packs, cartons and advertising was under consideration.
“The Department of Health is in communication with the Federal health authorities in Washington with the object of obtaining an official evaluation of the American warning scheme,” the Prime Minister said.
“The latest advice received Indicates that it is still too early to judge the effectiveness of the scheme, and that further reports will be issued from time to time as more information comes to hand and is assessed,” the Prime Minister added. The National Association on Smoking and Health said the Cancer Society had for so long been concerned with gathering money that it had forgotten its primary objective. "Research has linked smoking with lung cancer, oral cancer, cancer of larynx, of the oesophagus, urinary bladder and of the kidneys. “For the first time in its history it has broken fruitful ground in that the major cause of cancer in men has been found to be preventable. “With both medical associations taking a firm line, and with the Prime Minister’s advice that a cancer warning on cigarette packs Is under consideration, the Cancer Society finds the occasion opportune to tighten its lips in obstinate silence.” I
