High Quality Stock In Marlborough Show

While entries, generally, were not large, some of the major prize-winners at the Marlborough Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show today can be expected to provide strong competition at the New Zealand Royal Show at Christchurch next week.

Sheep classes were quite well supported, particularly the wool breeds section. Jerseys and Friesians were the mainstays of the dairy cattle section. Entries in the beef cattle classes were not large, but some of them came from studs with high reputations in metropolitan classes. This year’s annual show opened in fine, but overcast weather, and the day was devoted entirely to judging. Ring events will feature on the second day tomorrow. One of the principal entries of interest in the beef cattle section was Mr J. B. Hickman’s imported Aberdeen Angus bull, Princibet of Kinermony. Princibet sired this year’s champion two-year-old bull at the national Aberdeen Angus bull sale at Dannevirke, and is a full-brother to the top-priced bull sold for 25,000gns at the Perth sales this year. The major award in the beef cattle section fell to Mr

J. B. Hickman’s Aberdeen Angus heifer, Esperanza of Taimate. This heifer won the supreme championship in the Aberdeen Angus class, and was later awarded the meat and wool cup. She is one of two heifers sired by a Scottish bull, and calved here after their dams had been imported to New Zealand.

In the dairy cattle classes, the Friesian judge (Mr J. O. Malcolm, of Pahiatua) was well pleased with the entries. He said he was surprised to see such a good number of entries, Mr Malcolm is well-known in North Island show circles, and he owns New Zealand’s topproducing dairy cow, Frlsan, which in one season produced 10561 b of butterfat. Now aged 15, the cow produced a total of 30001 b of fat over three seasons. In the sheep section, the Corriedale judge (Mr G. A. Hutton, of Darfleld), found a very high standard in the ram and ram hogget classes. He was particularly Impressed with A. H. Kennington's champion ram which, he said-, had all the qualities that were desired. Mr Hutton said he would be very interested to See how the ram competed at the Royal Show next week. The Corriedale entries indicated that breeders had had a favourable season in this dis. trict. Mr C. H. Burrows, of Culverden, who judged the Romneys, found competition was strong in the woolly ewe hogget classes. These contained some wellgrown attractive young sheep. There was quite strong competition in the woolly ram classes, but the ram hoggets were a little disappointing. Marlborough provides one of the strongest Merino shows in the country, and with 66 entries in the fine, medium and strongeomblng classes, the Rakaia judge (Mr J. R. Todhunter) spent a full day deciding the placings. He considered the Merino section was very good. ' Championship awards were:— SHEEP Corriedale: ram, A. H. Kennington, Ltd.; ewe, A. H.
