JOHNSON’S WARNING
Ridicule From Peking (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) HONG KONG, Nov. 4. Peking today ridiculed President Johnson’s warning that China’s pursuit of a nuclear arsenal invited danger to itself and dismissed steps to prevent nuclear proliferation as “nonsense”, the “New York Times” news service reported. The Chinese reply to the President’s warning was contained in an article by “Commentator” in Peking’s “Jenmin Jih Pao.”
Commentator is believed to be the pen name of a senior Chinese official. President Johnson’s warning was issued when he commented on China’s latest nuclear test in a speech at Kuala Lumpur. He pledged support for any non-nuclear nation subjected to the “threat of nuclear blackmail.” He also said leaders of China must realise that any nuclear capability they could develop could and would be deterred.
