Morrison Guilty Of Murder
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, November 3. A jury in the Supreme Court at Dunedin today found Paul Colin Morrison, aged 19. guilty of murdering a constable, Donald Richard Stokes, aged 23. The jury of 11 men and one woman took four hours to reach their verdict.
Mr Justice Henry sentenced Morrison, who was visibly shaken by the verdict, to life imprisonment. Morrison had pleaded not guilty to murdering Stokes who died after being attacked in Dunedin gaol on August 14. Morrison was represented by Mr P. A. Williams and Mr B. Nordgren, of Auckland. Mr J. B. Deaker, with him Mr W. F. Thomson, appeared for the Crown. Continuing his summing up today, his Honour ruled that the definition of common intent did not necessarily mean a plan or agreement. The jury had to decide on the evidence of the actions of Morrison and Wilson, his fellow escapee, whether they had embarked on an enterprise to break from prison by use of violence. If so. common intent was established.
