Te Kooti’s Redoubt
I N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Nov. 3. Land surrounding Te Porere pa. the scene of the last pitched battle in the Maori Wars, has been declared a historic reserve. The pa itself, six miles west of Lake Rotoaira. between National Park and Turangi, was the famous redoubt of Te Kooti. It was declared a historic reserve in 1963. The 115 acres of crown land now included in the reserve still contains native bush through which Te Kooti made his escape
in October. 1869. to continue a guerrilla campaign until 1872. Te Kooti’s redoubt and the area where the battle for Te Porere was fought, would now be preserved as they were, the Minister of Lands (Mr Gerard) said today. The reserve will be controlled by the Historic Places Trust The trust has placed In the corner of the redoubt an inscribed burial stone, dedicated In 1961 by the Bishop of Aotearoa. to mark the graves of the 37 men Te Kooti lost during the battle.
