C.W.I. ACTIVITIES

The Canterbury Federation of Country Women’s Institutes had a busy month of meetings with social activities, guest speakers, and work for various charities. BURWOOD. Fourteen facecloths were received from members for Burwood Hospital. Six pairs of bedsocks and three bed-jackets were given to Nurse Maude Association, making a total of 32 pairs of bed-socks and four capes received. Members visited the Sheltered Workshop and bought articles made there. COALGATE.—Jars of jam and pickles were received for the Red Cross Society. Mrs I. Cullen discussed “What judges look for in show cooking” and Mrs J. Collin gave an illustrated talk on New Zealand birds. GLENTUNNEL. Mrs T. Blair presided at the institute’s birthday celebrations. Points prizes were awarded in the following sections: decorative, Mrs F. Smith and Mrs R. Hudson: handicraft, Mesdames E. Burmeister and R. ' Hudson; homecraft, Mrs G. Tomlin and Miss E. Kennedy; flowers. Mesdames E. Burmeister and J. Waters; most entries without a prize, Mrs T. Blair. The guest speaker, Mrs W. Oakley, reported on a panel discussion about World Children’s Day. GREENDALE. Mrs N. Shipley presided and welcomed a new member. A talk and films were presented by Mr N. Ashby, of Templeton Hospital. Gifts for the institute’s sponsored child were received. HILLSBOROUGH-HEATH-COTE.—Mrs N. Louden welcomed Mr I. Thompson, who told members of the activities and aims of C.0.R.5.0. Mrs G. E. Bishop won a make-and-model contest. The arts and crafts group had been busy wotting for the property project The choir circle had entertained at the Jubilee Home and at the Addington Sunshine Club. KIRWEE.—Mrs G. Seaton presided, receiving bed-socks, a layette, and singlets to be given to St Helens Hospital. BRYNDWR. The formation and development of the National Council of Women in New Zealand was the subject of a talk by Mrs I. Ashley, president of the Christchurch branch. LYTTELTON. Mrs C. O’Donovan presided. Members had visited the pottery works at Glentunnel. The entertainment group bad performed for Langford House residents. Arrangements were made to visit patients at Sunnyside Hospital. NORTH BEACH.—A new member, Mrs B. Clarke, was welcomed by Mrs G. Henderson. A link letter from Kent in England was received. A

floral demonstration was given by Mrs J. J. Melhuish.

SOUTH BRIGHTON.— The glee circle entertained senior citizens at Sumner and New Brighton. A parcel was sent to the institute’s sponsored child in Greece by the goodwill circle -Mrs L. J. Dixey presided.

SUMNER.— Sumner senior citizens were entertained by members at their 25th birthday party. The mayoress (Mrs G Manning) attended. Mrs G. E. MacLachlan, federation president, presented the prizes. Mrs A. Anderson won the cup for the most points, and the large and small bloom award. Mrs P. Nicholson and Mrs C. Merille won the award for the spike. DOYLESTON. Members celebrated the institute’s birthday with a bus trip to Lyttelton and were entertained by Lyttelton institute members.
