Seeking A Nuclear Power Station

“The Press” Special Service WHANGAREI, October 21. An atomic power station at Hokianga could conceivably turn Hokianga from depression to prosperity, Mr R. K. Trimmer, chairman of the Northland Harbour Board, said in a letter to local bodies in Northland.

The letter, which Mr Trimmer read to the board meeting last night, sought a concerted effort to put the case for siting the power

station on the Hokianga Har bour.

Mr Trimmer said that he had publicly invited the Minister of Electricity (Mr Shand) to investigate the feasibility of establishing the next atomic power station at Hokianga instead of on the Kaipara. “I admitted to him that no doubt there would be an increase in the transmission costs as Hokianga is 100 miles north of Kaipara and at present the main source of distribution would be Auckland city,” he said. “However, 1 turned the | Minister’s attention to the fact that large forests were en-| visaged north of Hokianga during the next 20 to 25 years. “An atomic power station at Hokianga could conceivably turn Hokianga from depression to prosperity. “Surely this is an aspect of the matter to which the Government can give some attention.” He said the Hokianga Harbour offered great depth of water and a fast current, factors important to a power station cooling system.
