Molasses Over Inspector
(N.Z. Press Association) PAEROA, Oct. 21. A farmer who poured a bucket of molasses over the head of a livestock inspector was fined £25 by Mr T. B. Mooney, S.M. The farmer, Daniel Edward McCaffrey, pleaded guilty to assaulting the inspector, Cecil Banks. Sergeant R. Gillespie said Banks had been making an inspection of McCaffrey’s farm. McCaffrey had applied for a permit to supply pigs with garbage. McCaffrey gave Banks one minute to get off the farm, and walked away. As Banks began his inspection, McCaffrey approached him from behind and told him he had 15 seconds in which to leave. He then poured the molasses over Bank’s head. Sergeant Gillespie said Me-
Caffrey seemed to treat the matter as a joke, and mentioned that if it had happened in Ireland, Banks would have been tarred and feathered. McCaffrey told the Magis- : trate that he had been in New 1
Zealand for 10 years. It was the easiest way he had of getting a little peace, as he had received 30 to 40 visits from Department of Agriculture officials during the 12 months he had been on the farm.
