She Thrives On Fish

Mrs Alice Hampton, a Newfoundland visitor who was in Christchurch yesterday, thrives on fish. As the wife of the president of the College of Fisheries in Newfoundland (Dr. W. F. Hampton) Mrs Hampton is particularly fish minded. “Our family has always enjoyed fish and we have a fish meal at least twice a week,” she said. “But we are very quality conscious and we eat only fresh fish.” She holds no great store by the old maxim that “fish is good for the brain,” but insists that it is an essential part of the diet, and particularly valuable for people with weight problems. “Fish is protein and has relatively low calorific content It can be steamed or broiled, keeping the calory content to a minimum,” she said. ‘Tish, being cheaper than meat, is also attractive for folks on a low budget.” Fish and chip shops were not as common in Newfoundland as in New Zealand. “Restaurants serve fish meals, but not as often as we

would like,” said Mrs Hampton.

Tourists and visitors expected fish foods and the Fisheries Board published books and recipes with a view to increasing fish consumption. The College of Fisheries had a cooking department which trained boys to be ship’s, cooks, and the course

included a very good section on fish cookery. Her husband’s Interest in the fishing industry was purely academic. He was not a sports fisherman. “There are no fish stories in bur household,” Mrs Hampton said with a smile.
