CARE OF FORESTS

It is important to have a full staff in the New Zealand forest service as a shortage in manpower will cut down on pruning and thinning of forests. Where staff shortages are experienced, new planting programmes have to be sacrificed so that the important tending role can be continued. Although the area planted in trees is a yardstick of progress. much of the monetary returns from sawn timber and its scope for wide use will be lost if tending is not kept up. With the fast-growing species like radiata pine, the margin for delay in pruning is a small one before it becomes no longer worth while to incur the expense of pruning.
