Most of the heavy machin-; ery for H. W. Smith (West Coast), Ltd’s., new sawmill atReefton was supplied by theSouthern Cross Engineering Company. Ltd.. Christchurch. I The sales manager of the company (Mr M. C. Taylor) said that the project was the biggest, from both manufacturers and design, that his company had undertaken. Mr Taylor said that the log carriage, supplied to H. W Smith (West Coast). Ltd., was. the first of its kind to be 1 wholly designed and made inNew Zealand. For the job, the ; company also designed a range of fully automatic timber milling machinery that would be simple to run and easy to maintain. Southern Cross would soon be able to offer the sawmilling industry a much larger range of New Zealand made machines, including the most modern band-sawing equipment, and a greater knowledge of design and application, he said. Mr Taylor said that nine complete auto-carriages had been made in the last year. Six more were under construction. “In addition to the company’s South Island activities, we have three mill projects under way in the North Island at present,” he said.
The South Island production of sawn beech timber, in 1000 board feet, is:— NELSON.—Red beech, 1465: silver beech, 395; hard beech, 227; others, 72. WESTLAND.—Red beech, 1065; silver beech, 323; hard I beech, 169; others 19. '. SOUTHLAND.—Red beech, 7604; hard beech, 7. I TOTAL PRODUCTION.— Red beech, 2530; silver beech, 8322; hard beech, 396; others, 98.
Mr Taylor said that the company and its associates worked hard to develop new items for equipment for the sawmilling industry. “We are very pleased to have been associated with Mr Smith and the other contractors who worked on the project and we wish him all the very best.”
