TENDERS FOR ENGINES

British Prices “Much Higher” (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 13. The lowest British tender price for 55 diesel-electric locomotives was “substantially higher" than the Japanese tender which was accepted, the Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) said in Parliament today. Earlier this month, a contract for the supply of lightweight diesel-electric locomotives to the Railways Department was awarded to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Ltd. Today Mrs E. E. McMillan (Opp., Dunedin North) asked Mr McAlpine if he would give the amount of the successful tender, advise if any British company tendered for the contract, and, if so, disclose the lowest British tender. It was Government policy not to disclose tender prices for supply contracts, said Mr McAlpine.

Still Unconscious.— Kevin James Robert Mullally, aged four, of Bateman avenue, was still unconscious in the Christchurch Hospital last night. He suffered severe head injuries on Monday night and has been on the seriously ill list since his admission to hospital.
