Social Security Payments

Sir, —My wife and I returned from a holiday oversees six weeks ago. I promptly advised the Social Security Department of this and received a reply from the Christchurch office on September 22 that my war pension (No. 2/5795) would be continued at £2 16s 3d a week. Unfortunately for us the department is withholding six months’ universal benefits amounting to £228 and we are living on bank overdraft plus war pension of £2 16s 3d weekly. I advised the department in writing six months ago that we wished to transfer from the war veteran’s to universal. —Yours, etc., WAR VETERAN. October 4, 1966. [Mr E. B. Pyne, the registrar of the Social Security Department, replies: “Payment could not be made until after your correspondent returned to New Zealand. Unfortunately there has been some delay which is regretted but the benefit due has now been paid.”]
