Snead Favoured For Ashburton

Snead and Goldmount, placed second in their races at Methven last Saturday, could form the winning on-course doubles combination at Ashburton tomorrow.

Snead was actually first past the post in the First Mount Harding Handicap, but was relegated to second for causing interference.

The son of U. Scott and Twig looks in great heart and should make amends in the Hinds Handicap, the first leg of this double.

Ranganui, an unlucky sixth at the New Brighton meeting on September 3, could offer most opposition to Snead. The roomy track at Ashburton should suit Ranganui, which seems to have plenty of ability. West End was not produced at Methven. He was a good fourth at Addington Raceway on September 3 at his only start for the season. His track work early in the month was of a sufficiently high standard to give him a winning chance. Final Count, Foaming Lass, Master John, Scott’s Song, Sonny Jim, Toff Scott and Winning Song have all raced well enough at times this season to be considered, but if Snead produces a peak effort, he should be too good for most of them.

Goldmount ran a pleasing race for second to the highlyregarded Nocatchem in the Avonmore Handicap at Methven. There does not look to be any Nocatchem in the Elgin Handicap and this should heighten prospects for a win by Goldmount. Mon Arnie, after breaking and then receiving a bad check, did well to finish third behind Nocatchem at Methven. She seems to be well above average in ability and with a smooth start, could make Goldmount work hard for a win. She will be bracketed with Linkwood Lady. Spry, Barbuda, Happy Wanderer, John and Torpi are others entitled to respect. The T.A.B. double will be run on the Ashburton Flying Stakes and the President’s Handicap. Fine weather is forecast and the track will be fast. ON-COURSE DOUBLE 11 a.m.— HINDS HANDICAP, £300; 2:15 class; lira. 5790 Boy Shepherd (3) .. It. 1404 Final Count (21) ..
