Giant Crane Moved

(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, Sept. 29. The first stage of transferring a giant crane from the western wall of the Westport Harbour to the eastern side was completed today.

The crane, without its 200 ft jib and other heavy parts but still weighing 150 tons, was taken along the beach road built by the contractors, Wilkins and Davies, and across Martins creek over a special ford of heavy roading material.

Today the crane will go from Martins bridge to Hannah’s Island, about a mile from the main Buller bridge. It will cross

the river at low tide on Saturday. On Sunday the machine will go to the breakwater area, taking a back route for part of the way through Westport township.

Mr R. A. Carlyon, project manager for M’ilkins and Davies, said the crane should be reassembled within two or three days for work on the breakwater.

In spite of its great weight it could travel on sealed roads without causing damage because the weight was distributed over a wide area of track.

The speed of the crane is just over three-quarters of a mile an hour.
