No Take-over Wanted

(from Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, September 29. The retiring president of the New Zealand Kindergarten Union (Mrs H. Downer) is opposed to the movement being taken over by the Education Department. “I firmly believe that the strength of cur movement lies in the desire to establish kindergartens and the willingness to,work for them,” she told the union’s conference in Westport.

“When we lose this motivating force we lose the vitality that has been a striking feature of our history. There are already signs of apathy on the part of parents in wellestablished kindergartens, and we must do all we can to resist this development and to realise our good fortune.” Officers elected were:—President, Mrs L. M. C. Ingram (Motueka): vice-president, Mrs J. S. Rea: executive, Mrs B. J. Brayshaw (Blenheim), Mrs D. T. Nicholson (Upper Hutt), Mr R. K. Papesch (Manawatu), Mrs E. M. Stevenson (Hastings). Next year’s conference will be held in Napier.

Zoo Proposal.— The Christchurch City Council’s director of reserves (Mr H. G. Gilpin) will be invited by the Canterbury Progress League to attend its next meeting to discuss the beautifying of the city and the possibility of establishing a zoo. The league decided this at its monthlymeeting.
