RAIL FERRY TO N.I.
Picton Route Cheaper The Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) has informed the Canterbury Progress League that a preliminary costing of a rail ferry between Wellington and Lyttelton had been undertaken. It was quite clear, he said, that for most of the inters island railway traffic the route through Picton would be cheaper than through Lyttelton. “For some very limited classes of goods, a Lyttelton rail ferry might in some circumstances be able to compete with a Picton ferry as far as Christchurch itself, but certainly not beyond there,” said Mr McAlpine’s letter. The league decided to write and thank Mr McAlpine for his letter.
