Rugby Tour Plan

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND.

A New Zealand University Rugby team may make a tour of Japan early next year, said Mr J. Jeffs, secretary of the New Zealand University Rugby council, yesterday. At this stage, said Mr Jeffs, all he could say about the Japanese tour was that it was at the discussion stage. His council had so far received a cablegram and a letter stating that the Japanese were interested in the tour, but an official invitation had not yet been sent. Recently, a projected tour of Japan by a South African

Universities team was cancelled by the South African authorities. If the N.Z.U. tour takes place it will be early next year, but will not clash with the University of Auckland tour, which comprises six matches in California between January 14 and February 1. Members of the Auckland team would be eligible for the Japanese tour. If the Japanese tour eventuates the N.Z.U. team is likely to be selected by the usual policy which has graduates, under-graduates and members of University clubs eligible for selection.
