N. CANTY GOLF

Clements To Defend Quality as well as quantity is represented in the field for the 72-hole North Canterbury golf championship. to be held at Waitikiri this week-end. R. E. Clements (Templeton) and J. R. Broadhurst (Russley) are the most notable competitors, and a frequent visitor, R. J. Ramsay, will be coming from Wellington to challenge their claims to the title. The younger contingent will be headed by P. K. Cleland (Russley) and D, R. Beggs (Rangiora), who is now on scratch. Some balloting out of players has been necessary this year: the field will consist of the 104 with the lowest handicaps. The handicaps of the senior competitors will range from scratch to six. The North Canterbury title will always be associated with K. D. Foxton, who won it on eight consecutive occasions from 1955. Clements ended Foxton’s great run by winning the 1963 title, and he was successful again last year. He will be one of the favourites after his splendid 65 in the Kaiapoi open lact Sunday. Broadhurst, too, will be a fancied candidate for the title in the light of his recent fine form in medal play. He has been six under par for his last five rounds. Among the absentees are the Freyberg Rose Bowl representatives, E. H. M. Richards, R. K. Atkinson, J. F. Logie and D. R. Hope.
