RACING Shut Gives Owner Long-sought Win

“The Press’’ Special Service , HASTINGS. The well-known Hastings breeder and owner, Mr T. C. Lowry, has had some good horses in his time, including Super Snipe and Key, but until yesterday he had not won the T. H. Lowry Memorial, an important race on the Hawke’s Bay spring programme.

The race is naiped after his father who made a tremendous contribution to racing during his lifetime.

Yesterday Shut, a five-year-old half-brother to Key, which Mr Lowry bred, finished brilliantly to beat John Derry and Lei by a long neck and half a head, with Hatari, winner of the Spring Handicap on the course on Saturday, a neck back fourth. Shut, 'which. is trained by D. Jones at Hastings, was ridden by the stable horseman, A. T. Jones.

Last season Shut won the Ashurst Cup and ran into placings in several important central districts provincial handicaps including a third in the Hawke’s Bay Centennial Cup. In the T. H. Lowry Memorial, Shut, which ran third in Saturday’s Welter Mile, was always within striking distance of the lead. He was fourth into the straight and ran on strongly along the outer to get up just short of the line.

Shut’s time of 2min 4sec was only a second outside the track record of 10 furlongs set in 1953 by Voiron. John Derry moved into a challenging position at the half-mile, joined Hatari in front at the three, and then looked very dangerous as he went three-quarters of a length ahead. However, Hatari fought back, Lei challenged and Shut raced up on the outside. In a terrific finish John Derry just failed to hold off Shut. Lei ran another gallant race for third after being handy throughout, and Hatari wilted just a shade to fourth. Fifth was Marine, which improved several places in the straight. Tolka, always within striking distance but unable to improve from the home turn, was sixth. Watchet and Mossburn were next. In a double pool of £102,495 15s, Shut carried 61,565 5s tickets. Successful Day Mr Lowry had earlier won the Parkvale Hurdles with Humber. He has a joint interest as well in Game, which gained an all-the-way win in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas. Mr Lowry’s partner in this Grand Faux— Tirage gelding is his wife. R J. Skelton never moved on Game at any stage. He turned for home two lengths clear of Archimedes and did not have to ask Game to make a real effort to hold off Raidan by two lengths. It was a most impressive performance by Game, because he did not have to do his best Game’s time of Imin 39 2-ssec was short of Devastation’s race record of Imin Game was a hot favourite. In a win and place pool of £19,918, he carried £8993, the remainder being spread over eight other runners. Game paid £1 7s 6d to win and 17s for a place. Game was bred by Mrs Lowry. He is a brother to the former good handicapper Cool, and is trained by K. H. Quinlivan at Hastings. Raidan was well back early, but moved up to be handy into the straight. He finished well under pressure but had no chance with the winner. The Te Awamutu visitor Head Off finished well for third. He just beat Gold Mint. Archimedes was disappointing. He had a good run, was second into the straight, then wilted badly to seventh. Form Reversal Jetmate, which had finished last at Otaki on Saturday, showed a reversal of form when he easily won the Visitors’ Handicap by three lengths from Dunraven. He

completed a T.A.B. double Three lengths half a neck, ric 7c ftri -fzvr Kintyre fourth. Time, 1:11 3*5. with Shut worth £46 7s 6d for wln . f 5 9s p] aces: _ji ig s gq, £l. £1 Bs, £3 3s.

jetmate, ridden by N. Eastwood, was fifth early, fourth at the half-mile and to the straight, then dashed clear to win as he liked. He carried

7303 5s tickets. Jetmate, which showed good sprint form in the central districts last season, is owned by Messrs S. R. and W. Nolan, of Palmerston North, and is trained by J. K. Searle, at Levin.

Dunraven, which finished second, was second at the half-mile and in front on the home turn, but he had no chance when Jetmate lodged his challenge. Hug, well back to the home turn, just beat Kintyre, sixth to the straight after leading early then being steadied, with Home On The Range a

promising fifth ahead of Harry Lauder. . The totalisator on-course handled £55,769 10s, an increase of £10,933 on the corresponding day last year. The increase for the meeting was £17,700 10s. The weather was fine, the track fast and the attendance was good. Results: —
