GAMES IN 1974
Chch. Must Apply Again "The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON. Christchurch will have to make an application within 10 weeks if it is to be the New Zealand-sponsored candidate for the 1974 Commonwealth Games. The New Zealand Olympic and British Empire Games Association, at its meeting last evening, decided applica tions for a venue for the 1974 games would close on November 30. The association chairman (Mr C. L. S. Cross) said that it was necessary to regard the 1974 applications as "completely new.” “While we sympathise with the Christchurch committee, we must recognise that other cities throughout New Zealand may wish to stage the games in 1974," he said. However, a decision on when the applications will be considered has been deferred until the N.Z.0.8.E.G.A.'s December meeting. Officially, the N.Z.0.8.E.G.A does not have to notify the British Commonwealth Games Federation of its applicant until six months before the Edinburgh games in 1970 Auckland and Christchurch, both of whom sought nomina tion for the 1970 games, are considered the only candidates for the games in 1974
