Work On Site Will Raise Hostel Cost
(New Zealand Press Association* AUCKLAND, September 19. A new university hostel to be built in Auckland will cost nearly £2700 a bed, at least £6OO a bed more than the original estimate.
A major part of the increase was because of extra works necessary on the difficult site, the Vice-Chancellor (Mr K. J. Maidment) told the University Council today. The hostel, to be built in
Whitaker place, was originally estimated to cost £310,000, for 150 students. Now the cost has risen to £418,000, for 155 students. The hostel will be known as International House and will have 60 places for Colombo Plan students.
The External Affairs Department has given a grant of £150,000 toward the cost, and the Government is expected to Increase its promised subsidy of £lOB,OOO to £136,800.
It is also hoped that the Government will provide £24,000 of the £50,000 cost of extra site work. The remainder, about £lOB,OOO, will have to come from endowment funds held in trust by the university.
