GROCERY WORKERS

Rises In New Award

Increases of £1 a week for seniors, branch managers, and assistants in charge of shops have been granted by the Court of Arbitration in a new award covering retail grocers’ assistants of all districts except the Northern industrial district, but including the Gisborne judicial district. The award was effective from August 1. Juniors will get increases of 5s 8d to 13s a week, and the minimum rate for seniors is now £l6 a week. Male workers with school certificate will be paid at the rate they would normally be paid after six months, and those with university entrance will be paid at the rate they would normally be paid after 12 months. The award stipulates that the number of juniors in any shop shall not exceed two to the first senior and one additional junior to each additional senior.

Occupiers of shops in any locality may transfer the late night normally observed between Christmas and January 3 to any working day during the period of three weeks before January 1, provided that no two late nights are observed with less than two other nights between them.
