MINIATURE RAILWAY
Scarborough Refused
A miniature railway would be out of place in the Scarborough reserve, the City Council agreed last evening. At a recent meeting approval had been given to an application to have a miniature railway operating during the summer, provided nearby residents were canvassed to ensure that there were no objections. One of 11 residents seen objected because “children and young people need, not commercial amusement, but provision for enjoyment by their own efforts, building castles in the sand, paddling, swimming and surf-riding, swinging and slides.” The place was also aesthetically satisfying to adults, the objector said.
“The council has spent a great deal of money in bringing this area up to a high standard and It is felt that the proposed train may detract from the pleasant atmosphere,” the parks and recreation committee said. "It is considered likely that further objections would probably be made once the train began operating.” A more suitable site might be found elsewhere in Sumner.
Ended Sequence.—-The Auckland boxer, F. Taupola, broke the winning sequence of B. Opetaia, also of Auckland, when he wen their professional catch-weight bout with a seventh round technical knock-out last night.
