SET-BACK IN ELECTIONS

Ruling Party In Sweden (N .Z PA.-Reuter—Copy right) STOCKHOLM, Sept. 19. Sweden's ruling Social Democrats suffered a crushing defeat in municipal election results today and the Premier, Mr Erlander, hinted that it might mean a general election. With 4500 of the total 6238 districts counted, the Social Democrats, in power for 34 years, had 41.8 per cent of the total votes—a loss of 8 per cent. Communists surged ahead, especially in the capital, to take 5.9 per cent of the vote. This was more than double their total in the 1962 municipal elections.

The Conservatives also registered big gains.
