“Mufti” Road Patrols
Sir, —Those who decry the “mufti” patrol cars are being, to my mind, both childish and petty. Potential killers, such as impatient drivers, intoxicated drivers, and fast and reckless drivers, must be kept to an absolute minimum. It is ridiculous to suggest that radar and “mufti” patrol cars are either “alien” or “at conflict with modern democratic principles,” Innocent lives are at stake. Those who endanger others’ lives must be found and stopped. If these are good methods, then let us use them. As to the effect of the “mufti” cars, no number of conspicuously marked patrol cars on the roads will stop an impatient driver attempting a dangerous passing manoeuvre if one of these cars is not in sight. However, the thought that the car he is about to pass may be a "mufti” will at least make him think again.—Yours, etc., D.F.G. September 18, 1966.
