Conscience

Sir,—l cannot see how it is possible for an individual citizen of a sovereign nation to justify defiance of a particular section of its laws. I have respected the conscientious objector, but it has been my unhappy experience to find that the same conscience, in peace time, can lie, cheat, and betray friends whenever expedient. It is another flatter to oppose the bad actions of one’s government for as long as it is legal to do so. A case in point is the betrayal of those who served and died in wars, by acts encouraging former enemies to re-arm. Having seen miles of sea strewn with bodies after a Nazi attack on a passenger convoy, I am incensed to learn that the West German navy had a “former” U-boat.—Yours, etc., VARIAN J. WILSON. September 18, 1966.
